Pesticide Formulation Types Explained — EC, SC, WG, CS, FS and More

Understanding the difference between formulation types helps buyers, distributors, and brand owners choose the right product for their market and application.

Why formulation type matters

The same active ingredient can perform very differently depending on how it is formulated. An Imidacloprid EC, SC, WG, and FS each have different application methods, shelf life, crop safety profiles, and cost structures. Choosing the right formulation type is critical for efficacy, safety, and market acceptance.

EC — Emulsifiable Concentrate

The active ingredient is dissolved in an organic solvent with emulsifiers. When mixed with water, it forms a milky emulsion. ECs are the most common formulation type globally — easy to manufacture, stable in storage, and compatible with most spray equipment. Downsides include solvent odour, potential phytotoxicity on sensitive crops, and higher environmental impact from solvents.

SC — Suspension Concentrate

Fine solid particles of the active ingredient are suspended in water with dispersants and stabilizers. SCs are water-based, so they have lower solvent content than ECs — making them safer for the applicator and the crop. They offer good biological efficacy and are increasingly preferred by international markets. However, SC formulations require specialized milling equipment and careful quality control to maintain particle size distribution and suspension stability.

WG — Water Dispersible Granules

The active ingredient is formulated into dry granules that disperse readily in water. WGs are dust-free, easy to measure, and have a long shelf life. They allow high active ingredient loading (40-80%) which reduces packaging and transport costs. WG formulations are popular in international markets because they are safer to handle than powders and more concentrated than liquids.

CS — Capsule Suspension

The active ingredient is enclosed in polymer microcapsules suspended in water. CS technology provides controlled release — the active ingredient is released slowly as the capsule wall degrades, extending residual activity and reducing initial peak concentration. This makes CS formulations safer for the crop and the environment, with longer-lasting field performance.

FS — Flowable Concentrate for Seed Treatment

A specialized SC formulation designed for application to seeds rather than foliage. FS formulations contain adhesion agents that ensure the product sticks to the seed coat during planting. They provide systemic protection to seedlings from germination, protecting against early-season pests and diseases without foliar spraying.

Other formulation types

SG (Soluble Granules): dissolve completely in water, leaving no residue in the tank. WP (Wettable Powder): older technology, being replaced by WG in most markets. SP (Soluble Powder): dissolves in water for true solution spraying. GR (Granules): applied directly to soil or standing water without mixing — common in paddy cultivation.

Agronica's formulation capability

Agronica manufactures across all major formulation types — EC (5 KL/day), SC (2 KL/day), CS (2 KL/day), WG/SG (3 MT/day), and FS (2 KL/day) — with a combined daily capacity of 14+ KL/MT. Whether you need a specific formulation type for your market or want to develop a new formulation, our R&D and production teams can deliver.
