Why contract manufacturing in India?
India's agrochemical industry offers a unique combination of formulation expertise, competitive manufacturing costs, and a large pool of registered active ingredients. For multinational companies, national brands, and growing agrochemical businesses, outsourcing production to an Indian contract manufacturer allows access to this capability without the fixed costs of building and maintaining a dedicated plant.
1. Formulation capability
Verify that the manufacturer can produce the specific formulation types you need — EC, SC, CS, WG, SG, FS, WP, SP, or GR. Not every plant can handle every type. Ask about their equipment list, milling capacity (for SC and WG), encapsulation technology (for CS), and seed treatment capability (for FS). A manufacturer who offers multiple formulation types under one roof gives you flexibility to expand your product range without changing partners.
2. Production capacity
Match the manufacturer's daily/monthly capacity to your volume requirements — not just current volumes, but projected growth over the next 2-3 years. Ask about their utilization rate. A plant running at 95% capacity may struggle to accommodate your surge orders during peak season. Look for a partner with headroom to scale.
3. Quality management
ISO 9001:2015 certification is the baseline, not a differentiator. Go deeper: ask about their raw material testing process, in-process quality checks, finished goods release criteria, stability testing program, and retained sample policy. Request a factory audit — a confident manufacturer will welcome it. Ask to see their QC lab and meet the quality team.
4. Regulatory compliance
Verify CIB/CIBRC registrations for the specific products you need. Check that the manufacturer holds all required state-level licenses (Form-I). If you need export manufacturing, confirm they hold an IEC (DGFT) and have experience with export documentation — CIB export permissions, CoA, phytosanitary certificates, and customs paperwork.
5. Confidentiality
Your formulation specifications, batch records, and brand identity must be protected. Insist on a formal NDA before sharing any proprietary information. Ask about their information security practices — who has access to formulation data, how batch records are stored, and whether they manufacture for your direct competitors on the same lines.
6. Track record and references
Ask for references from existing contract manufacturing clients (without violating their NDAs). Check the manufacturer's CIB registration history — a company with 50+ registrations has demonstrated regulatory competence over many years. Look for industry memberships, trade fair participation, and government supplier registrations as additional credibility signals.
