How to Import Pesticides from India

A practical guide for international buyers, distributors, and importers looking to source crop protection products from Indian manufacturers.

Why source pesticides from India?

India is the world's fourth-largest agrochemical producer and a major exporter of generic pesticide formulations. Indian manufacturers offer a wide range of off-patent active ingredients at competitive prices, backed by established formulation expertise and regulatory infrastructure. For buyers in Africa, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America, India is often the most cost-effective and reliable sourcing destination.

Step 1 — Identify what you need

Before approaching an Indian manufacturer, define your requirements clearly: which active ingredients, what formulation types (EC, SC, WG, etc.), target crops and pests, required pack sizes, estimated annual volume, and whether you need the product under your own brand (private label) or the manufacturer's brand.

Step 2 — Find a registered manufacturer

Look for manufacturers who hold CIB/CIBRC registrations for the specific products you need. A CIB registration means the product has been tested and approved by India's Central Insecticides Board. Also verify ISO 9001:2015 certification and an Importer-Exporter Code (IEC) issued by DGFT — this confirms the company is authorized to export.

Step 3 — Request samples and specifications

Ask for product samples, a Certificate of Analysis (CoA), Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), and Technical Data Sheet (TDS). Test the samples in your local laboratory or through an accredited testing facility to verify active ingredient content and physical properties match your requirements.

Step 4 — Understand Indian export documentation

Your Indian supplier should handle all India-side export compliance, including: CIB export permission (required for each consignment), phytosanitary certificate (if required by the destination country), Certificate of Analysis per batch, commercial invoice with HS codes, packing list, Bill of Lading or Airway Bill, and customs clearance documentation.

Step 5 — Check destination country registration

Most countries require pesticide products to be registered with their national regulatory authority before import. This is separate from the Indian CIB registration. Work with your local regulatory consultant to understand the registration process, timeline, and data requirements in your country. Some Indian manufacturers offer regulatory support for destination-country registration as part of their export service.

Step 6 — Agree on terms and place your order

Typical export terms include FOB (Free on Board) or CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) pricing. Minimum order quantities vary by formulation type — liquid formulations like EC and SC typically start at 1,000-5,000 litres, while solid formulations like WG and SP start at 500-2,000 kg. Payment terms usually involve an advance payment (30-50%) with the balance against Bill of Lading.
